5 Cwmdonkin Drive - the birthplace of Dylan Thomas

In Swansea, Glamorgan

Welcome to 5 CWMDONKIN DRIVE - join us on a journey through history. This house played a large part in shaping the style and output of one of the finest poets of the Twentieth Century. Dylan Thomas was born in the first floor front bedroom of the house in 1914 and continued to return to the family home until his parents moved out in 1937. Over two thirds of his published output was written in this house - most in the tiny bedroom next to the gurgling hot water pipes in the airing cupboard.
The house has been restored to original condition when bought as a new house in 1914. From 27th October 2008 (Dylan's 94th birthday) the house has been available to let as a themed holiday experience - for example, if you book for 14th August 2009 you will enter 5 Cwmdonkin Drive on 14th August 1915 - a newspaper of the day will await you but no phone, no television and no radio!
First Floor
Front (best) Bedroom For most of the twenty three years that the Thomas family lived at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive the front bedroom was kept for 'best'. It was the show room of the first floor with views out to Cwmdonkin Park and it was where young Dylan first drew breath
Nancy's Bedroom Dylan's sister was eight years old when he was born and later she was described as an attractive. outgoing young lady who had ambitions as an actress.
Bathroom and WC An inside toilet was almost unheard of in Victorian times - the Thomas family even moved from a house in Sketty because there was no drainage - so having a separate inside WC must have been considered very 'posh' for the upwardly mobile family
Dylan's Bedroom The tiny room was next to the airing cupboard with the '...gurgling pipes...' is where Dylan lived for most of his twenty odd years at Number 5.
DJ and Florrie's Bedroom The back bedroom was where Dylan's parents slept except when they had taken in a lodger.
Ground Floor
The Front This is the porch at the front of the house. Dylan said later that, as a small boy, he could never understand why so many young men never returned from 'The Front'
Parlour or Lounge (The best room) In some Welsh houses the best room was kept locked except when used for special occasions. One of these would have been Christmas at Number 5 with snoring uncles and singing aunts tipsy after sipping the parsnip wine
DJ's Study This was a very male room where DJ retired to mark his school books and read from the classics. The young Dylan was obviously impressed from what he saw and heard
Living Room This was part of Florrie's world where the family met to eat and converse
Kitchen Florrie cooked twice a day with the help of a daily maid and a Monday maid to help with the washing. Off the kitchen is the pantry or larder where food was kept cool and the scullery with its deep sink and storage for every day crockery and the pots and pans.
Tariff
The house costs from £750 for a mid week break in low season to £2400 for a week in high season and sleeps up to six
